Self-Employed

Contractor at Moonbounce

Software Engineer

to

  • Migrated a production AWS backend from a monolithic container deployment to an event-driven microservice architecture.
  • Addressed resource allocation, database connection pool and timeout issues affecting more than 50 concurrent active users.
  • Replaced a dedicated API container with AWS API Gateway.
  • Configured public and private entry points for backend services.
  • Implemented AWS Lambda functions for on-demand code execution.
  • Used Amazon EventBridge to route events and data between services.
  • Used DynamoDB for state management within serverless workflows.
  • Reduced reliance on continuously running container services.

Software Engineer

to

  • Built and tested a Discord integration that assigned points to users for activity within a specified server channel.
  • Used the Discord WebSocket gateway to receive interaction events.
  • Recorded interaction events without storing message content.
  • Developed a timestamp and loop-checking system to calculate participation points.
  • Migrated the integration to a serverless, event-driven architecture.
  • Ran the persistent Discord gateway connection in a dedicated container service.
  • Removed sensitive data before forwarding required information through a private AWS VPC connection.
  • Used API Gateway, Lambda and EventBridge to route events to tagged microservice functions.

Software Engineer

to

  • Designed and implemented an Express.js API server using TypeScript.
  • Integrated Auth0 authentication and middleware using JSON Web Tokens.
  • Embedded user GUIDs into token claims through the Auth0 Hooks API.
  • Implemented request-level permission checks.
  • Initially developed the API using Python and FastAPI.
  • Deployed the initial version to Amazon EC2 behind an NGINX reverse proxy.
  • Migrated the API to Express.js in a Docker container on Amazon ECS.
  • Used AWS VPC networking and Route 53 for service routing.
  • Managed PostgreSQL database design, migrations and data operations.
  • Used joins, triggers and PostgreSQL views to manage read and write operations.
  • Excluded non-essential user data from storage and application logs.

To the hiring manager,

I am applying for the [Position Title] position at [Organisation Name].

I have software engineering experience involving Rust, TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, SQL, Node.js, Express.js and FastAPI. My work has included API development, PostgreSQL database management, authentication, container deployments, serverless infrastructure, event-driven systems and microservice architectures.

As a contractor at Moonbounce, I migrated a production AWS backend from a container-based monolith to an event-driven microservice architecture. The system used API Gateway, Lambda, EventBridge and DynamoDB. The work addressed database connection limits, resource allocation and timeout issues affecting concurrent users.

I also developed and maintained a Discord integration using WebSockets, container services, private VPC connectivity and event routing. The integration processed user interaction events without storing message content. Earlier work included an Express.js and TypeScript API, Auth0 and JWT authentication, PostgreSQL, Docker, Amazon ECS, EC2, NGINX and Route 53.

My current volunteer work at Unsudo includes development of an experimental distributed DNS alternative in Rust. The project uses peer-to-peer concepts, key-pair authentication, encryption and libp2p. The repository is available at git.disroot.org/unsudo/glue .

My distributed networking experience includes libp2p, Kademlia distributed hash tables, circuit relays, multiaddresses, peer routing, pathfinding, Gossipsub, publish-subscribe systems, MeshCore and MQTT. I also contribute technical advice to research involving decentralised compute, Polkadot JAM, RISC-V and WebAssembly.

My infrastructure experience includes Cloudflare Access and Zero Trust, OIDC integrations, SSO, Cloudflare WARP, Tailscale, Proxmox, Portainer, Docker, NGINX, Caddy and NixOS. This includes access policy management, site-to-site networking, subnet routers, exit nodes, tagged resources, virtual machine provisioning and LXC provisioning.

I can be contacted by phone on 0492 995 302 or by email at sykesduncan32@gmail.com .

Regards,
Duncan Sykes
